The Bassai Kata comprise of 2 Kata, namely
Bassai Dai – greater version
Bassai Sho – lesser version
Meaning
To breach/penetrate a fortress, to overcome
Also known as Passai/Patsai.
History
There are around 20 variations of this kata, testament to their long history. Supposedly the oldest version can be found in the Okinawa village of Shimabuku, and was passed down by Bushi Matsumura. Today’s kata are either directly or indirectly derived from Matsumura Sokon.
The kata originally handed down as Passai Dai and Passai Sho by Itosu are those found in Shotokan today
